Majority of the scholars, who were doing the university entrance exam preparation, had already filled in the forms to apply for admission for best gre prep course in the university of their choice. Some have received the offers, while others have presently accepted the free offers.
Pupils have the likelihood of getting an unconditional offer for a position on an undergraduate program before they complete their school qualifications.
An Increasing Number of Unconditional Offers
The amount of unrestricted offers given to 18-year-old scholars from Wales, England, and Northern Ireland has increased for the last five years. In 2018, the sum was 67,915 which is higher compared to 2,985 for the year 2013. 7.1% of offers given to scholars last year were unconditional, an indication of the current trend of yearly increases.
Unsurprisingly, a recent report from the colleges and universities unions recommends restructuring the college admission system for scholars in Wales, Northern Ireland, and England.
The present system allows potential scholars to apply for degree programs in the year before they take their A-level exams. High schools give the universities possible expected grades which can matter when evaluating whether to provide the applicant with a university place. Pupils then get offers which are conditional in most cases. However, there is an increase in unconditional offers.
Achieving the Grade
The findings by the college unions show that the growing tendency towards unrestricted offers changes the scholars’ decision-making processes and eliminates transparency. It also states that it is of no use to teachers who guide the A-level pupils. The students tend to lose motivation and hard work when they get the unconditional offer. Perhaps, the rise in unrestricted offers is a sign of dysfunction in the present system, not a cause.
The Report’s Suggestions
As an alternative, the report recommends a drift towards an approach whereby candidates will not be offered a position on an undergraduate program until they finalize the relevant qualifications required to enroll for the course.
It also describes procedures to ensure that the scholars on their A-levels are well-prepared for the move to college. This move could result in pupils concentrating on the university application process in their final years towards getting the A-levels. Scholars would obtain comprehensive guidance on higher education preferences back in secondary school before they begin on the college application.
The Clearing Period
For this technique to work, the article suggested that the A-level examination and their results would need to be pushed forward within a few weeks. Currently, results are released, resulting in the clearing period. It is when scholars who have either passed or failed in comparison to the projected scores try to get a place in the university.
The suggested timeframe for the new method tends to be problematic. Instead of placing the 12% of candidates who applied through clearing in the weeks between results release and commencement of the university term, all students would need to get cleared within that short time.
It is an overwhelming approach from university managers’ viewpoint. The report also highlights that as compared to other parts of the world, Wales, Northern Ireland, and England have an abnormal and broad university sector which is reliant on pre-qualification admission.
